Don't Bring A Home Unwelcome Tourists - Bedbugs

Summer is here and that means vacations and traveling. After a little fun in the sun and needed downtime. Other than rest and relaxation and a few chosen souvenirs, the last thing you want to bring back is an unwelcome tourist to your home --- the dreaded bedbug.

Bedbugs are small, oval, brownish insects that require human or animal blood to survive. Adults are about the size of an apple seed and are flat before feeding. Once they are full, their bodies swell and turn a reddish color. Sounds fantastic, right?!

Although these pests don’t fly, they get around rather quickly moving over floors, walls, and ceilings. Just like many other insects, females can lay hundreds of eggs. To humans the eggs appear to be a speck of dust and it only takes about a month for bedbugs to develop fully from an egg to a nymph to an adult.

Even five-star resorts aren’t immune to bedbugs although though they may be exceptionally clean. They go undetected entering a home or hotel via luggage, clothing, bedding, couches, and other items. Their flat bodies allow them to enter tiny, tiny spaces. There aren’t any nests to find, but they do love a good group hiding place. A favorite is unfortunately mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and headboards offering easy access to unsuspecting sleeping vacationers.

The only good thing is that they are not thought to transmit disease, but the last thing anyone wants is an infestation of bedbugs, disease or not.
