Pest Control During the Winter

The cold temperatures in the winter keep the flying insects like mosquitos and flies away. A welcome relief from those little nuisances when we do get a warm day to enjoy the outdoors in the winter months. However, just because we don’t see those outdoor pests doesn’t mean that we should neglect pest control during the winter months. Cold weather leaves mice, cockroaches and spiders scurrying about seeking shelter. Guess where that shelter is? You guessed it! Your warm and cozy homemaking pest control just as important during the winter as it is during all the other seasons.

In addition to continuing regularly scheduled pest control appointments, you can do the following to keep pests from hibernating for the winter in your home:

  • Keep bushes near your home trimmed. A good rule of thumb is to keep about five feet of clear space between the edges of your home and the nearest plant, keeping pests from using the plants as a shelter.
  • Leaves should be cleared regularly as leaf piles make fantastic cover for pests.
  • Store firewood approximately 15-20 feet away from your home keeping it elevated on a shelf or platform to deter insects and rodents from making a home between logs.
  • Seal cracks and holes on the outside of your home to keep pests from being able to enter. A mouse can fit through a hole the size of a dime!
  • Cockroaches love moisture-rich sites that allow for infestation. Check your kitchens and bathrooms for leaky pipes and clogged drains. Gutters should also be kept free of debris to allow them to function properly and prevent water accumulation.
  • Keep food in hard plastic or glass, airtight containers. Pests are able to access food stored in cardboard or plastic storage bags.
